Yes he knows what happened in the anime. Al's soul was stuck in the gate so he didn't fully revive him like he would've done his mother trying to pull her back from the otherside a Human transmutation would never be possible and would always create a Homunculus since there is no equal to human life other than another human life that's pretty much what all of FMA was about.
